Chapter 18

Harrison

It was only an hour or so after the garden’s closing that darkness settled in, and the newcomers arrived, Lizzy and Jena’s sister, Lidia, arriving through a portal Fitz had made, grinning mischievously. Harrison was thankful, though, when she was closely followed by her much more sensible sister, Mariana.

As the newcomers were introduced to Diana, as well as Miz, Rei, and Hyacinth, Diana asked him silently, Um, does Mariana always wear so many hand-knitted . . .

She seemed to run out of words for a moment.

. . . accessories?

Smiling, he filled her in.

She has a lot of domestic magic. Trust me. You don’t want to get on the bad side of her crochet and lace and knitting. When that girl goes on the defense, look out!

Although she said nothing, Diana seemed to bewilderedly accept this.

Looking to Lizzy, Diana did ask, “Uh, how many sisters do you have, anyway?”

Sighing, Lizzy looked resigned.

“Ever read Pride and Prejudice?”

Diana shook her head, and Harrison knew that, if it hadn’t been part of her training, she didn’t know it. Roman and Greek mythology? No problem. Classics of world literature that weren’t required for a hunt? No.

Throwing her hand up in the air, Lizzy added, “Thank Hecate! Someone doesn’t know my whole history!”

Clearly, Diana was even more bemused by this, so he added, I’ll explain it later, if you’d like, which she seemed to accept, and the moment moved on.

As usual, Liddy was a bundle of energy simply waiting for a bear or two to tackle. Harrison knew that Fitz’s mom had brought her in to be the usual playmate of the baby dragons she tended, as the darling little brutes could flame her and pile her down to the ground, or get caught while flying and rolled around on—things they could never do with normal humans without seriously damaging or killing them.

He attempted to explain some part of this to Diana, who was obviously a bit overwhelmed.

Don’t they all get hurt?

Dragons, Diana, he smiled. You always underestimate how impervious we are.

He could feel that she was rather thankful for this, if also rather amazed.

Liddy and Rei sound perfect for each other.

Harrison laughed.

I don’t think Liddy swings that way, my dear, but a battle between them could be one for the ages.

For a moment, he thought about it.

I’m just not certain whether that would be good for Rei or the beginning of the apocalypse.

He felt her repressing a laugh, as their friends started to explain their plans, Jena going first, having already covered what they knew about what was out in the rice fields for Liddy and Mariana’s sakes.

“Liddy, we need you to go confront them. You’re the only one who can without suffering from their attacks.”

Interrupting, Rei bristled at this.

“I could.”

Jena’s patience was eternal.

“But they’re more likely to talk to her than to you, once they realize they can’t hurt her,” she explained.

Although she didn’t seem to like it, Rei did reluctantly agree, and Harrison understood their reasoning.

The ghosts who existed out in those
